MARIPOSA- A variety of beautiful minerals and rocks will slide into the fairgrounds as the Mariposa Mineral & Gem Show, “Mountains of Minerals” returns on Saturday April 14th and Sunday April 15th. Our 12th annual show will take place at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds, on historic Highway 49, two miles south of the town of Mariposa, or 30 min. North of Oakhurst. Admission and parking are FREE!
Show hours are Saturday 10:00 – 6:00 and Sunday 10:00 – 4:00
A wide variety of gemstone jewelry and rough, breathtaking mineral and rock specimens, fossils, crystals, beads and mineral related crafts of all sorts will be available from our many vendors. World class gold and rare gemstones are on display in the California State Mining & Mineral Museum which resides at the fairgrounds year round. This could be your last chance to see the Museum if we are forced to close and move this June.
California State Parks will offer a variety of children’s activities at the show. In addition to viewing the spectacular California State Mineral Collection, kids can go on a scavenger hunt in the museum, and explore rocks and mineral crystals at the touch table. All activities and demos are free.
Several guest speakers and demonstrations are also on the schedule. Saturday at 11:00 Robin Williams will offer a Geology program for kids showing how rocks are made. Saturday at 2:00, Jim Pisani, of the American Opal Society, will tell us about California’s Jade, and its imposters. On Sunday at 11:00am local prospector and owner of Gold Rush Trading Post, Fred Radonic will show us the basics of using metal detectors. Sunday at 2:00 local artist Gerry Cross will have a beaded jewelry demonstration. Saturday and Sunday throughout the day Museum docents will demonstrate gold rush mining methods. See the tools and methods used by the 49ers to survive and find gold.
The Museum Association is sponsoring a silent auction of jewelry, rocks, and minerals. Geode cutting is back again by popular demand, and you will find many unique jewelry items handcrafted by local member artists, at the Mariposa Gem & Mineral Club booth. Local vendors will also be available with a variety of food items.
